Marcus Johnson In Store with Flo Wines!

June 29, 2012

Just a heads up about a special event we’ve got for you this Saturday!

As you know, every Saturday, Adega hosts a free wine or beer tasting from 2pm-5pm, where we give you the chance to try some new and different items from our shelves. This Saturday, June 30th, we’re excited to have Marcus Johnson joining us in store with his brand-new line of wine, Flo.

Marcus, a longtime friend of Adega, will be here talking about his wine, the Flo project, and signing bottles. We’ll be playing his internationally-acclaimed music, and we’ll have some CDs to sell, too! Marcus Johnson is a DC resident, world-renowned jazz musician, and lifestyle entrepreneur. His albums have achieved chart success and critical acclaim, and he has been nominated for an NAACP Image Award alongside such greats as Wynton Marsalis and Vanessa Williams. (If none of this rings any bells, then you may know him as the headliner of the Silver Spring Jazz Festival.)

We had a chance to try both Flo wines; a red blend and a Chardonnay, both from California. The wines are well-crafted, with an eye towards approachability and a subtlety that makes them deceptively drinkable. We’re proud to showcase these wines this Saturday, and are honored to be working alongside such an accomplished artist on his newest artistic endeavor.

For more information on Marcus and Flo, check out:

The event will be this Saturday, 2pm-5pm. Tastings of Flo will be offered, and bottles and CDs will be on sale. Come early!

Maryland Wine Week!

June 6, 2012

Maryland Wine Week runs from June 8-17, and we’re joining in the celebration!

Wednesday, June 13th, from 5-8pm, Ray from Cygnus Wine Cellars will be in store, pouring special flights and glass pours of three of his best wines. We’re excited to have Ray bring his insight and experience with winemaking to Adega, and we hope that you’ll join us for this fantastic opportunity to try wine from one of Maryland’s finest wineries.

Glass pours and flights of three wines will be available from 5-8pm, with Ray pouring and talking about his wines and winery. Cygnus is located in Machester, Maryland, and focuses on making wine from 100% Maryland-grown grapes, including estate bottlings and some single-vineyard offerings, such as the Cabernet we’ll have on hand. Ray is passionate about wine — just ask him about French Rosé, and you’ll see what we mean!

Recently, Maryland wines have taken a turn towards quality and showing locality, rather than simply being easy-going quaffers. From all that we’ve tasted, we’ve found Cygnus to be one of the wineries at the top of that charge, and the winemaking shows attention to terroir, a passion for old-world style, and an understanding of what comes next. We’re very pleased to carry Cygnus, and we hope that you’ll come out, try for yourself, and join us in our excitement.
If you have any questions, contact us at the store or hit us up on Twitter or Facebook. See you there!

This Week’s Wine Tasting!

June 2, 2012

Join Chris Short from Lanterna Wines today, from 2pm to 5pm, and try these wines, free! Bottles of our featured wines are 10% off, all day.

Apòstoli Pinot Grigio Veneto, Italy (IGT, 2010)

A pleasingly medium-bodied take on the popular style, showcasing notes of pear riding on a fresh acidity through to a quick, clean finish.

Desert Wind Semillon Wahluke Slope, WA (AVA, 2008)

A Columbia Valley, single-vineyard gem from the masterful Mark Chargin. Off-off-dry, with a fulfilling palate of peaches and cream that lingers.

Novecento Cabernet Sauvignon Mendoza, Argentina (D.O., 2011)

Sweet spice layered on top of soft tannins. A gentle, medium-bodied Cabernet ends with a lasting, subtle note of blackcurrant and oak.

Dante Robino Malbec Mendoza, Argentina (D.O., 2009)

A deceptively complex wine. Full and fruit forward, with decent acidity giving way to a fiery finish. For the price, this wine has depth to spare.
