Weekly Free Tasting: Today’s Features

Saturday, November 23, 2013, 4PM-7PM

It’s time for Thanksgiving wines! Be sure to join us for two more special Thanksgiving tastings from 4-7pm Monday and 5-8pm Wednesday.

Juvé y Camps Brut Nature, Cava Gran Reserva, Spain, 2008            $21.99

Champagne-level quality – in fact, better than many more recognizable names. Gran Reserva is the highest level of Cava, reserved for single-vintage, dry wines  aged at least 30 months or more. Start your celebration off right!

Girlan “Aimè” Gewürztraminer, Süditrol-Alto Adige, Italy, 2010   $29.99

This is the wine our wine buyer will be serving this Thanksgiving. A floral, sweetly fruity nose blends beautifully with traditional turkey and cranberry, and is an excellent choice for those serving up seafood or vegetarian main courses.

Duck Pond Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley, Oregon, 2010                   $31.99

Pinot plays nicely with game and wild foul, as well as turkey. Provides a refreshing dose of sweet, bright raspberry and cherry to lighten up a heavy meal, while solid acidity helps to clean the palate.  Step up from Beaujolais this year!

Zaleo Tempranillo. Ribera del Guadiana, Spain (2011)                     $19.99

Fruit forward; more robust than value wines featuring this grape, but still light enough to play nicely with foul and veggies. Hints of subtle black pepper spice help to liven up earthier dishes, with plenty of acidity to wash it all down.

We’re starting to look ahead to Thanksgiving dinner, and everything – everyone? – that comes with it! Join us for a special two weeks’ worth of tastings, as we explore some great new wines and old favorites, all with an eye towards mashed potatoes, football, parades, and in-laws.

Lamberti Extra Dry, Prosecco D.O.C., Italy, NV                                     $18.99

Don’t let the name fool you, “Extra Dry” is actually just a touch less dry than traditional Brut. A great wine for hors d’oeuvres, or to use in Bellinis.

Maximo Tempranillo, Castilla, Spain, 2011                                            $13.99

For traditional Thanksgiving fare, Tempranillo can be used in many of the same ways as Pinot Noir. A smooth, softer red, with refreshing acidity and fruit.

Piccini “Mem?ro”, Blend, Italy, NV                                                           $12.99

This blend was created from four grapes from four different regions of Italy, to celebrate Piccini’s 125th year of winemaking. A very versatile, food-friendly red.

Muscanti, Brut, Spain                                                                                    $10.99

From the same grapes and region as traditional Cava, this wine uses the Charmat method, more popularly used in Italy for making Prosecco.

Matchbook Chardonnay, Dunnigan Hills, California, 2012               $17.99

The term “old head” on the label refers to the use of used oak versus new, which allows the wine to gain the benefits of oak without being overpowered.

Cono Sur “Bicicleta” Pinot Noir, Chile, 2012                                          $14.99

Cono Sur is a 100% Carbon Neutral winery. The name “Bicicleta” refers to the bicycles they use to get around their vineyards.

Goddess Sweet Torrontés, Mendoza, Argentina, 2012                            $13.99

A Southern Hemisphere take on still, sweet wine. Surprisingly versatile, featuring a blend of Chardonnay and Moscato, with no sugar added during fermentation.
